Laser to destroy cancerous cells

PARIS:
In a ground-breaking advance, French neurosurgeons on Friday said they had
successfully treated brain tumours through ultra-keyhole surgery, using a tiny
fiberoptic laser to destroy cancerous
cells.

Alexandre Carpentier of
the Pitie-Salpetriere Hospital in Paris said the work was "a world-first" in
its use of multiple advanced techniques and of local anaesthesia rather than
general sedation.

So far, eight
volunteers have been treated in the pilot programme, launched December 2006,
Carpentier said.

"They were
hurt from metastasing brain tumours caused by various cancers, mainly lung
and breast cancer that failed to respond to conventional treatment and were
otherwise inoperable," he
said.

Doctors had given the
volunteers only if three months left to live, on
average.

Under the pioneering
technique, a minute hole three millimetres (0.12 of an inch) wide-eyed was drilled
into the skull, allowing the operating surgeon to precede a water-cooled fibre-optic
laser into the brain.

The
surgery became possible because of a revolutionary American-designed optical maser that
is permanently chilled to forfend causing parentage clots on contact with the brain or
epileptic fits.

The device was
gently guided towards the tumour surface area with the help of a magnetic resonance
imagination (MRI) scanner. Every trey seconds, a computer workstation calculated
the temperature at the surface area being burnt-out by the laser to ensure that there was
no life-threatening overheating and to confirm that only tumorous cells were organism
destroyed.

The patient standard
only a local anesthetic, remaining conscious in order to be able to speak to
the medical team to help verify that cerebral functions were not being harmed.
However, "the patients feels nothing during the operation and mostly can
depart hospital 14 hours later, the eve or the morning after the operation,"
the surgeon said. The results are "conclusive," said
Carpentier.

Treating the
patients completely requires two or more than bouts of surgery, and there had been no
cases of cerebral bruising or epilepsy. So far, six of the eight have completed
the broad programme. Of the sixer, five receive not had a relapsea return of
cancerous cells to the brainat a nine-month monitoring
point.

"This is the first time
that laser technology has been used intracranially, meaning inside an enclosed
skull, using MRI in real time to avoid collateral damage," aforementioned Carpentier.
"This is the predecessor of future techniques in which MRI will dally a magnetic core
intervention purpose in neurosurgery."

Ramsey Lewis has foresightful straddled the bound 'tween bop-oriented idle words and pop music. Most of his recordings (particularly by the mid-'60s) were identical approachable and attracted a large non-jazz hearing. In 1956, he formed a triplet with bassist Eldee Young and drummer Red Holt. From the originate (1958), their records for Argo/Cadet were democratic, although in the early years, they had a strong jazz mental object. In 1958, Lewis as well recorded with Max Roach and Lem Winchester. On the 1965 albums The In Crowd and Hang On, Ramsey made the pianist into a major drawing card and from that tip, on his records became practically more predictable and pop-oriented. In 1966, his trio's military force changed with bassist Cleveland Eaton and drummer Maurice White (by and by the founder of Earth, Wind & Fire) joining Lewis. In the 1970s, Lewis often played galvanizing pianissimo, although by by and by in the x he was relieved to acoustic and hiring an extra keyboardist. He toilet electrostatic play melodic jazz when he wants to, hardly Ramsey Lewis has broadly speaking stuck to easy listening pop music during the past 30 days. In 2004 he released Time Flies, a appear back at some of his most popular songs through new recordings.

Kanye West Overcomes Sound Problems To Stun Global Gathering

US knocker Kanye West proclaimed himself to be at the top of the hip-hop ladder as he headlined the Global Gathering Festival in Stratford-Upon-Avon tonight (July 25th).

The rapper, who was making his only UK festival appearance of 2008, wowed a 55,000 strong crowd with hit-laden set that pulled tracks from his three studio albums.

But, despite his undeniable enthusiasm, much of West’s set was plagued by poor sound levels that meant some of his biggest tracks failed to resonate amongst the audience.

Taking to the stage shortly after 9.30pm, West, who was dressed in smart black jacket and colourful t-shirt, began his performance with ‘Good Morning’ and ‘I Wonder’ – both of which feature on the rapper’s third album ‘Graduation’.

From there, he ploughed into ‘Diamonds from Sierra Leone’, which had the festival crowd forming diamond shapes with their hands.

After a powerful rendition of ‘Alls Fall Down’, West, who spoke sporadically throughout his set, praised the crowd, saying: “Feels so good to hit the stage and rock 55,000 of you.”

‘Kerry Katona’

Although West’s set had been billed as the only UK performance of his Glow in the Dark tour, which wowed American crowds earlier this year, the rapper refrained from any high profile collaborations.

Instead, he simply rapped over the Chris Martin featuring ‘Homecoming’ and Estelle’s ‘American Boy’.

None of the elaborate light displays and stage props that captivated US audiences failed to materialise either.

Speaking to Gigwise, one festivalgoer described West’s set as “soulless”, adding: ‘It’s a bit like the Kerry Katona of festival performances.”

But by the time West dropped ‘Stronger’, his final song of the night, the earlier sound problems were a distant memory as the crowd sang along to the Daft Punk sampling song.

Stayed tuned to Gigwise for all the pictures from West’s set.

Kanye West’s set list:

‘Good Morning’

‘I Wonder’

‘Heard ‘Em Say’

‘Champion’

‘Diamonds Are Forever’

‘Flashing Lights’

‘Homecoming’

‘Stronger’ (exert)

‘All Falls Down’

‘Touch The Sky’

‘Gold Digger’

‘Good Life

‘Jesus Walks’

James Bond returns in new novel

LONDON (Reuters) - A warship moored in the Thames River, and Royal Marines mounted guard on Tuesday to mark the return to action of the world's most famous spy, James Bond, in a new novel.

"Devil May Care," published on Wednesday, is the latest adventure for the hard-drinking, womanizing action hero created by Ian Fleming and adored by millions worldwide through 14 books and a series of blockbuster films.

Penned by British novelist Sebastian Faulks at the request of Fleming's estate, the latest novel is set in 1967 and portrays the aging secret agent as vulnerable and damaged but with an undiminished sex drive.

Publication marks the centenary of Fleming's birth.

To honor Bond's code name 007, Faulks signed seven copies of the book, which were then taken under guard from HMS Exeter to a book store in central London ahead of publication.

Faulks is better known for his wartime novels such as "Charlotte Gray" and "Birdsong." He admits he was somewhat daunted when asked to write as Fleming, describing it as counter-casting.

But the idea grew on him and he warmed to the task, emulating Fleming's rigid work schedule and studying his plot lines and prose for inspiration.

"In his house in Jamaica, Ian Fleming used to write a thousand words in the morning, then go snorkeling, have a cocktail, lunch on the terrace, more diving, another thousand words in late afternoon, then more Martinis and glamorous women," Faulks said.
